Does Mouthwash Really Work? Does Mouthwash Really Work?

Does Mouthwash Really Work?

Mouthwash is everywhere - from supermarket shelves to dentist recommendations; but does it really do what it promises?

The short answer: yes, mouthwash can work. But its benefits depend on their ingredients, how you use it, and when!

What does mouthwash actually do?

There are two key types of mouthwash:

  • Cosmetic mouthwashes: These freshen breath but don’t offer lasting protection
  • Therapeutic mouthwashes: These contain active ingredients like chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, or essential oils that target plaque, bacteria, and inflammation

Used properly, therapeutic mouthwashes can:

  • Reduce gingivitis (characterised by inflammation of the gums, typical symptoms include redness, swelling, and bleeding.)
  • Help prevent plaque build-up
  • Freshen breath for longer
  • Support gum healing after dental treatment

That said, mouthwashes are not a replacement for brushing or flossing; they’re a supplement, not a shortcut.

Not all mouthwashes are equal

Some formulas - especially those with high alcohol content can cause dry mouth or irritate the tissues. Others may stain teeth with prolonged use (like chlorhexidine-based rinses). Over-the-counter mouthwashes with artificial sweeteners or synthetic dyes may also be unsuitable for daily use if you’re aiming for a clean and natural oral routine.
