What is dental whitening and how does it work?
Dental whitening aims to lighten the shade of tooth enamel by breaking down or removing pigments that cause stains. Traditional methods often use peroxide-based agents (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) which oxidise organic molecules within enamel to make them less pigmented.
Is whitening safe?
When used under controlled conditions and at appropriate concentrations, whitening is generally safe. However, overuse or using strong formulations can lead to enamel erosion, sensitivity, and gum irritation. Products should be vetted for safety and used as directed. Please always consult a dental or medical professional before starting anything aggressive.
How long does whitening last?
The effect depends on your diet and habits. Consumption of staining foods and drinks (coffee, red wine, black tea) or habits like smoking accelerates relapse. Many people maintain results for 6–12 months before needing touch-up treatments.
Will whitening damage enamel?
Strong peroxide concentrations or frequent use can soften enamel microstructure, increasing roughness or porosity. Some studies have observed mild interprismatic dissolution after peroxide treatment. (PMC9915942) However, newer non‑peroxide formulas like PAP (phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid) show whitening with reduced enamel damage in early trials.
Which type of whitening is best for me?
It depends on your sensitivity, staining degree, and preferences. For mild staining, gentle peracid options (like PAP) or light‑assisted bleaching may suffice. For deep intrinsic stains, supervised clinical peroxide whitening may be needed.
